Sleep. We all know it’s good for us, yet we tend to overlook it. The truth is we could improve a lot of things in our lives with just a bit more shut-eye.
Here are five reasons to make sleep a priority.
1. Behind the Wheel, It’s Safety First
Not getting enough sleep at night can decrease reaction times and decision making. Road safety reports have concluded that sleep deprivation is one of the leading causes for accidents. Drivers who have been without sleep for 17 hours are impaired as much as a driver with a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.05.
2. Increase your Alertness
Can’t get through the work day without several cups of coffee? This dependence on caffeine develops quickly without adequate sleep. Waking up and feeling refreshed in the morning can help you to feel alert more naturally. Higher levels of alertness lead to increased productivity, creativity and efficiency.
3. Burn the Calories and Eat Healthier
When you sleep, your body burns a lot of calories. When you are sleep deprived your body craves junk food more. So what exactly are we saying? If you are trying to avoid putting on extra weight, getting more sleep will burn more calories and will also help you have less cravings for unhealthy foods during your waking hours.
4. Enjoy the Weekend
Hibernating during winter months to catch up on your sleep deprived work week may have been ok, but with summer just around the corner it’s time to get outside and enjoy the weather! Wasting half your day catching extra sleep means missing out on activities with friends and family. By keeping a consistent bedtime during the week and on the weekends, it will make getting up at a reasonable hour a lot easier. When you are sleep deprived throughout the week, making the most of your weekends gets to be a whole lot harder.
5. Don’t Worry, Be Happy!
Feeling blue? Get some sleep! Good sleepers tend to be happier people and there are studies to support this. Sleep deprivation has a huge impact on our happiness – and not in a good way. In the Happily Healthy Project, taken by over 60,000 Australians, the happiness levels for those getting less than 7 hours a night were over 15 percent lower.
