Meet Neville: A Master Craftsman’s Perspective on Australian-Made Excellence
At A.H. Beard, our commitment to Australian craftsmanship runs deep — and few people embody that spirit more than Neville, one of our master mattress makers. With over 40 years of experience, Neville has dedicated his career to honing his craft and helping shape the future of Australian-made mattresses.
We sat down with him to talk about what being an Australian craftsman means to him, how manufacturing has evolved, and why choosing locally made truly makes a difference.
Here’s what he had to say:
1. What does being an Australian-made craftsman mean to you personally?
For me, it’s all about pride — taking real pride in what you create. Being a craftsman means not being afraid of failure, but learning from it and always looking ahead to the next challenge.
I believe you should never rest on your past achievements. Instead, you should constantly ask yourself: How would I want this product to look and feel if I were the customer? That mindset keeps the standard high, every single day.
2. How have Australian manufacturing standards evolved over the last 40 years?
Manufacturing has come a long way. Production methods are far more efficient now, but we’ve kept craftsmanship and quality at the centre of everything we do.
We’re always looking for ways to innovate — whether it’s refining how we make mattresses for better workplace safety or exploring new materials.
I’ve seen us move from using traditional fillings like cotton, flock, and kapok to advanced foams that offer a better balance of comfort and support. It’s been an exciting evolution.
3. What sets Australian-made mattresses apart?
Australian-made mattresses are built for Australia’s climate and the specific needs of Australian sleepers.
Our quality control is incredibly strict, and everything we produce is handcrafted by skilled artisans who have years of experience behind them.
We always prioritise sourcing Australian materials first, before looking overseas — and I think the real advantage is how quickly we can create a product that’s tailored to what our customers are asking for.
4. What would you say to consumers choosing between Australian-made and imported mattresses?
Choosing Australian-made means choosing better quality, more trust, and longer-lasting craftsmanship.
It also means you’re supporting local businesses and the broader Australian economy — and you’ll often benefit from faster turnaround times too.
For me, it’s a win on every level: quality, trust, community, and service.
5. Can you share a memorable moment from your 40 years with A.H. Beard?
One moment that really stands out was my first trip to China as an A.H. Beard ambassador.
I had the opportunity to showcase how our handcrafted Signature mattresses are made. It was an incredible experience — a real career highlight that made me feel proud to represent Australian craftsmanship on the world stage.
