Whether you’re simply on the fitness train or you’re an esteemed athlete preparing for a big event, there’s one thing you need to remember about fast-tracking your fitness goals. Sleep is your best friend. Here are five reasons why.
1. Muscle Memory
When your body is getting an adequate amount of sleep there is a burst of brain activity that increases the release of calcium responsible for promoting muscle memory. These bursts mostly take place between the 6th and 8th hours of sleep and can only be induced by sleep. So if you’re not getting those valuable hours of sleep, mastering your fitness technique can be a very tiring challenge.
2. Health
To live an healthy lifestyle you need a healthy immune system. During sleep the immune system fires up and releases natural killer cells. These cells get rid of any virally infected and dangerous cells. This means that when you don’t get enough sleep you are more likely to catch a cold or flu. The more time you spend feeling sick in bed, the less time you get to spend working on your fitness.
3. Recovery
It is essential to get a good night sleep in order to improve your muscle strength and fitness. It is during deep sleep that most of your body’s growth hormone is produced, which is fundamental to muscle building and repair. Without sufficient sleep you will struggle to build muscle size and strength, and even run the risk of chronic muscle injury.
4. Attitude
Sleep can have a tremendous impact on your mood and energy. When you’re sleep-deprived the feelings of fatigue and decreased motivation arise, and your body will begin producing a hormone called cortisol during times of stress. A bad mood combined with higher levels of stress is a recipe for underperformance.
5. Reaction time
In any type of training you’ve got to stay on top of your game, and coordination and reaction time can be crucial. Research shows that basketball players who slept 10 hours every night for five weeks could sprint faster, react 10% quicker and sink 9% more free throws and three-pointers.
