2016 is a new year and a fresh start, which gives you heaps of time to accomplish new goals and resolutions. It is a great feeling, that is, until you get to December each year and realise that the promise you made to yourself back in January has become a distant memory that faded away along with the end of summer. However, 2016 is going to be different. We have worked to create 7 simple New Year’s Resolutions that take minimal effort but will help improve the quality of your sleep. Happy New Year to everyone and enjoy your Better Sleep in 2016.
1. Stop Watching TV Right Before Bed
Watching TV before bed will stimulate your brain and make it harder to fall asleep. If you have a TV in the bedroom, try moving it out of there to avoid the temptation of channel surfing instead of counting sheep.
2. Balance Your Fluid Intake
Save yourself a trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night and monitor how much you are drinking before you go to sleep. We recommend decreasing your fluid intake about 2 hours before going to sleep.
3. Make Your Bed for Sleep and Sex
No more late nights working on the computer while your partner is trying to sleep or watching movies on your bed. Your bed should be for sleeping and for having sex, and those two things only.
4. Stick to a Bedtime
Set a reasonable bedtime for yourself and make it a priority to be in your bed by that time every night. By going to sleep at the same time every night, your body will recognise when it is time to go to sleep. This will help you fall asleep more easily, ultimately improving your sleep.
5. Lose the Booze
Alcohol is a depressant and might make you feel drowsy, but many people fail to realise that it prevents you from entering the deeper stages of sleep that you need to wake up feeling refreshed. Drinking alcohol right before bed might help you feel tired and fall asleep quickly, but it won’t improve the quality of your sleep.
6. Wind Down Before Bed
Spend about an hour relaxing at the end of your day. Put the work away an hour before you go to sleep and let your mind rest by reading a book, talking with your kids, taking a warm bath or doing some stretches. There are many ways to wind down at the end of the day, but making this a constant habit will help put your mind at ease before bed.
7. Quit Snoozin’
The Snooze button is your worst enemy and will actually make you feel more tired when you finally decide to get out of bed. When you break up the last phase of your sleep with an multiple alarms, it leaves you feeling less rested. Need help breaking this bad habit? Try putting your alarm on the other side of the room to force you to get out of bed.
